XII Century Fortress in Belgorod-Dnestrovsky
XII century fortress built by ancient slavs on the frontier of their
country, which later on became Ukraine. Authentic, untouched, nothing
added. Was used as a military base as well as a place to hide from
the savage nomadic tribes from south called Pechenegs and Polovtsi. A must see.
During the summer a boat excursion around the outer walls, facing the
sea, is possible. Cameras are allowed, shopping for local artefacts
and souvenirs.

Sofiyivsky Park, Sofijivka.
The park and the palace in it (which did not survive to the recent
days) were founded in in 1796 by Count Stanisław Szczęsny Potocki, a
rich local noble. He was deeply in love with a married woman Zofia
Witt. She had two children. Divorced were unacceptable at that time,
and it took them six years to get her divorce. While waiting, Potocki
built a magnificent palace (ruined by Russians when they annexed
Ukraine in 1919) surrounded by a park. The park contains temples,
lakes, an underground river, numerous fountains, "love
nooks" and grottos. All have Greek names, because at that period
ancient Greek and Rome were fashionable. The underground river is
called Acheron, for example (In ancient Greek mythology, Acheron was known as the river of pain,
and was one of the five rivers of the Greek underworld). There are boats to go into this
underground passage, the boatsmen using oars. The temple of Thetis is
covered with running waterfall, which stops every 15 minutes to show
us the temple behind and the statue of Venus in it. Diana's mirror,
Lower and Upper lake, fountain Snake (12-16 meters (39-52 feet) in height running
water included) and other sights make this place a magnificent must
see.

Odessa catacombs.
Odessa is a relatively young city for Ukraine, only 200 years old
(the capital, Kiev, is 1500). It was built from the limestone, dug
from under the city itself. Odessa is now stand on the 2500
kilometres (1,553 miles) of underground passages. Buildings and cars
sometimes collapse, when a new opening is formed due to the
underground erosion. Exploring them is prohibited by law, since it
can be dangerous. There are several entrances, though, which can be
explored with a specially trained guide. One of them is Nerubayskoe,
a little village at the neighbourhood of Odessa. It contains a
partisan base. During the WW2 local resistance group hid there. There
is still an authentic radio transmitter, their hospital, bedrooms and
so on. A must see for people, interested in history.
